Irmo, South Carolina is a town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. It was founded on May 10, 1885 by John A. Irvin and named for him. The town has a population of approximately 606 as of the 2010 census. The town's first optical store was opened in 1895 by Mrs. Hilda Witherspoon and her husband J.C., who were both natives of Scotland. They sold spectacles, contact lenses, reading glasses, and other optical supplies to residents of Spartanburg County and nearby counties. In 1914, Drs. Harry Witherspoon and Alfred Pritchard purchased the store from Mrs. Hilda Witherspoon and continued to operate it as an optical supply shop until their death in 1965. In 1978-79, Mr./Mrs.(unknown last name) Urquhart reopened the store under the name "The Optical Shop" after purchasing it from Drs.#1 & #2 Urquhart which had closed 3 years earlier at the same location on Weldon Avenue (now known as Simpson Boulevard). In 1984-85, The Optical Shop moved to its current location at 309 Weldon Ave., where it remains today with over 117 years of history! The shop continues to offer a wide variety of eyeglasses products including basic types such as corrective lenses andsunglasses along with more specialized items such as contact lenses for people with astigmatism or using special glasses prescriptions
