Irmo is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and home to the Irmo High School. In 1822, John Tryon moved from Elizabeth City, North Carolina to what is now Irmo with his family and began farming. Tryon named his new settlement for General James Irvin who had fought in the American Revolution against British forces. In 1828, Tryon's son-in-law built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Tryon died there in 1829 and was buried in nearby Greenville Cemetery. The town of Irmo was platted on March 10, 1856 by Jno Pugh and Wm Henningsen under their name of "Pughsboro". On November 5 that year, it became part of Spartanburg County when it was organized. The first post office here was established on December 3, 1860; it continued until May 25, 1861 when it changed its name to "Irmo". The first store in Irmo opened on October 8th, 1865 by Cephus Broughton under the name "Broughtons'. On September 11th 1909 local citizens erected a large cross around which they called themselves "The Knights of Columbus." This led to many social activities being held here including dances and picnics that have continued up through today! One event still remembered fondly from those days is when members of The Knights did an impromptu play parade down Main Street during halftime of a football game! Other early businesses include Mrs Owens' Dry Goods (later renamed Barnes & Noble), First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Peanuts Company (now Walmart) and Jno Pugh's sawmill which produced logs for lumber companies such as White Sulphur Mining Co., Edwards Mills etc... soon after this small community would undergo some big changes with the arrival of automobiles! Buses were originally brought into town for transportation but due to space limitations several years later these buses would be replaced by motorcycles! In 1976 Irmo voters passed an ordinance establishing limits onselfishness within our community thereby paving way for today’s current day village form! With so much industry now present within our boundaries as well as more people living close by; many events are now hosted outside our doors instead straight into our hearts at Athletic Park or even out beyond our gates at Brittney’s Landing State Park which offers plenty things for everyone including fishing!!!

Irmo is a small town in South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Irmo was founded on October 11, 1868 by Confederate Veterans John Hogg and James Peebles. Originally known as "Hog Island", it became Irmo after Hogg's plantation was sold to local citizens in 1875. The town name honors General Robert E. Lee and his family who were residing in nearby Lexington at that time. On February 20, 1886, Irmo experienced its first tornado when a powerful windstorm swept through the area killing one person and injuring many others. That same year saw one of the most significant events in Irmo's history when two churches were destroyed by fire; both churches had been built shortly before by Reverend J.B Meredith with help from members of the community together for religious education and worship services for all people living within three miles of where they stood (which included all those living on Hog Island). The devastating fire also resulted in more than $10,000 worth of damage to buildings and crops within five minutes! The townsfolk rebuilt both churches soon after but tragedy struck again when another severe tornado touched down just south of town on May 5th 1909 causing extensive damage to homes and businesses including six fatalities along with $30,000 in damage ($ million today). In 1916 Irmo got its own post office which opened up new opportunities for residents including shopping at local stores as well as receiving mail from around the world directly from your mailbox! This service continued until 1963 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts by then postal authorities – thankfully no other properties were lost during that time! Irmo has gone through several different incarnations over the years with some form of governmentestablished control beginning as early as 1788 under British rule while later becoming an unincorporated village prior to statehood in 1889 under then Governor Atherton Dawson Johnston’s administration. With few exceptions throughout its various incarnations (euphemistically called “villages”) Irmoland has always operated essentially as a single municipality - though historically there have been occasional breaks caused by boundary changes or annexation/separation resulting from growth or development outside our boundaries; typically such incidents result only in minor adjustments to municipal titles rather than any substantive change to how things work inside our little town limits! After being annexed into Spartanburg County following a vote taken during white supremacist paramilitary activities against African Americans taking place north of town on September 12th 1865local officials decided enough was enoughand ordered all black residents outby November 15th 1865 officially ending Reconstruction Era efforts within our county lines thereby ensuring continued Jim Crow segregation across much ofsouth central SCuntil 1971 statehood ushered blacks into full equal opportunity citizenry!! On December 3rd 1870the first African American resident permanently moved into irmoland via free choice process pursuant to provisions set forth statutory regulations governing voting rights duly approved & authorized by then County Commissioner Fielding Dorman(future First Lady Bebe DuPont),purchased 640 acres near present day Canton Woods off HWY 56 about 8 miles east northeastof downtown spartanburg
On March 6, 1851, a group of men from Irmo, South Carolina founded the town of Irmo. The town was named after Isaac MarshallIrmo, an early settler in the area. The community had a Post Office and two stores when it was first established. The first postmaster was J.W. Nicholson. In 1882, theIrmo & Spartanburg Railroad was built through Irmo and the community experienced growth. In 1912, iron ore mining began in nearby Greenville andEysterville and soon there were several mills in Irmo producing goods such as flour, cotton ginners’ yarns, shoes and hats. By 1932 there were six mills operating in Irmo with a population of over 900 people. In 1957, Irmo became a city and today is home to over 12000 residents who enjoy its beautiful scenery including hillsides covered in forests as well as some of the most beautiful homes on Clemson University's campus
