Irmo is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. Irmo is located on the banks of the Ashe River and is adjacent to Lake Lanier. The first permanent settler in Irmo was Ebenezer Higgins, who arrived in 1786. Higgins was primarily a landowner and developer; he built churches and schools in Irmo and other rural areas around Spartanburg County. In 1835, Higgins' grandson John Aiken founded what would become known as Aiken & Company – one of the earliest cotton gin companies in America – in Irmo. Moses Hogg settled here about 1810, beginning a long tradition of farming hereabouts. He also donated land for industrial development; his mill still stands today near downtown Irmo. Hogg's grandson John married Maria Childers (1806–1868), daughter of Colonel Edward Childers (1792–1875). They had six children: Moses Hogg II (baptized December 12, 1826 – died January 21, 1889), Maria Ewing Hogg (July 25, 1830 – May 14, 1903), Martha Rhetta Childers Elliott (May 10, 1833 – February 5, 1912), Ebenezer Higgins Jr., Alfred Riley Childers (October 15th 1840 - August 3rd 1912) and Anna Julia Childers Webber (September 22nd 1845 - March 6th 1915). After her death young Maria married United States Senator Rutherford Bancroft II on October 28 th 1870 . Their only child was Sarah Jane Bancroft US senator from New York City 1917-1925
