Irmo is a small town in Upstate South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Irmo is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson County, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is one of the oldest towns in Upstate South Carolina and was established by white pioneers in 1820. The first settler in Irmo was Samuel Motte who arrived with his family from Georgia in 1820.Motte built a cabin on a swampy piece of land that became known as "Motte's Swamp." Other early settlers included John White and his brother James White. In 1824, William Houstoun moved to Irmo from Scotland with his wife and two children. He founded what became known as Houstoun's Store on Main Street. By 1830, there were 10 households in Irmo and 2 stores open for business. In 1831, Elijah Hicks settled in Irmo along with his wife Lucy and 3 children under the name of Hicks & Company (later renamed Hicks Bros.). They started a farm which they continued to operate until their death in 1886. After their deaths, the farm passed into family hands until it was sold to George Pritchard in 1943 who then operated it for many years before it passed through several ownership changes until it came into private hands again beginning in 1984 when it was donated to the township by its current owner Frank Cramer The first school withinIrmo limits was organized on November 5th, 1829 by Reverend Elias Settle as an academy for freedmen under instruction from Drury Lewis Douglass who had been sent to teach them at Christmastime1828). Reverend Settle also taught Sunday school classes from this academy until he resigned due to health concerns on December 12th 1830 . The first teacher hired for primary school purposes was Mrs Jane Browning who teaching Latin grammar until she resigned after one year due to illness on July 4th 1832 . On September 2nd 1830 , Colonel John Knopper arrived with five families including himself and rented land south of present day Main Street near where Post Office now stands This area which would become known as Knopper's Field became home to many businesses such as Houstouns store (now defunct)and later Pritchard's grocery From here Knopper took over farming operations while still living at home providing transportation back and forth between fields2 miles away2 hours each way1 hr 30 min travel time using puncheon transport made available by slaveowners during this period
Irmo was founded in 1848 as a small town on the banks of the Savannah River. The first post office was opened in Irmo on May 8, 1849. The town grew rapidly and by 1860 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1870, Irmo became the seat of government for Colleton County. In 1876, Irmo was renamed to honor Confederate General Prentiss Irmo. In 1902, the town incorporated and adopted an official name: "Millsboro". Millsboro experienced rapid growth during World War II with its many factories producing munitions and other war goods. After the war, mills closed and thetown started to decline until it reached its current status in the early 1990s.
