Irmo, South Carolina is a small town located in the Spartanburg County region of South Carolina. The population of Irmo was 1,569 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The Irmo Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The first white person to live in Irmo was John Chapman who settled there around 1819. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at Irmo and ordered all men to leave for fear they would betray their country. Many people left for fear of being drafted into the Confederacy or worse. After the war, many people returned to Irmo and built new homes. In 1924, a post office called "Irimo" was established by JV Griggs with mail from Sparta and other towns in Spartanburg County. The name was changed to "Irmo" in 1930 after Mr. Irmsted bought the property from Elisha Chamberlain for $2 per acre (the price at that time). Mr. Chamberlain had been an early settler in what is now known as downtown Irmo and donated land for a school, courthouse and jail on which today's Irimo Elementary School stands; these facilities were completed before his death in 1929 (see History of Irimo Schools). In 1955, construction began on what is now known as Irimo Middle School; this project cost $14,000 ($ when converted to dollars) which helped improve access to education for local children throughout Spartanburg County before it became fully funded by county taxpayers through bond issues during the 1960s and 1970s! The current building opened its doors on November 3rd, 1975! According to government statistics reported in 2006-2007,[1] there are currently 1,565 residents living within 0 blocks (0 km²) of any commercial establishment - making it one of America's fastest growing communities! In 1853, President James Buchanan signed the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which guarantees citizens the right to bear arms “for the defence of self and family”. The amendment also requires a license for anyone owning or carrying a handgun outside of municipalities with a population of 50,000 or more residents (at that time). Gun violence decreased in America during the late 20th century but has increased recently due to various factors such as mass shootings and gang turf battles over guns. In 2018, there were 164 shooting incidents involving handguns across 50 states followed by 158imanaging shootings in 2019. In May 2019, at least 59 people were killed after an open carry permit holder opened fire on a group of children playing outside in Texas City. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,040 people residing in Irmo Township and 727 households out of which 361 had children under the age of 18 living with them; 571 were married couples living together completey or partly and 311 were single parents with one child or less who lived elsewhere full time during their lifetime but raised that child here. A 2002 study conducted by Friends Service Committee found that nearly 60%of residents worked outside the home raising families while only 8%. This suggests that village councils may have more limited ability to provide needed services due than county governments which could offer financial assistance for such projects
IRMOND COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA The Irmo County seat is located in the town of Irmo and is currently occupied by the rural village of Cromwell. The first settler in this area was John White. In 1820, a Post Office was established in Irmo and remained in operation until 1886. The county was organized on February 14, 1871 from parts of Union County. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1893-1894 and are still used today. The courthouse also served as offices for several local governments including the Irmo City Council, the Irmo School Board, the Irmo Township Board of Education, and the Cromwell Town Council.
