Irmo is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 6,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town center is located on US-29 and US-301/US 68. The first permanent settler in Irmo was David Hogg on November 12, 1847. Hogg's family had come from Scotland four years earlier. In 1854, Isaac Carney bought land in the town from David Hogg for $2 per acre. Carney built a log cabin and named it "Irmo". In 1865, John Mclntyre purchased land east of Irmo from Carney for $10 per acre. He built a small frame house which he called "Mclntyre's Cabin". Mclntyre became a wealthy man and donated his land to Irmo for public use as well as building an addition to his home that served as the first schoolhouse in Irmo. In 1902, William Aiken founded the Aiken Oil Company on land west of Irmo and within walking distance of his home. The company operated until 1907 when it merged with Standard Oil Company to form ExxonMobil Corporation In 1930, Hiram Revels opened the oldest general store in present day irMO when he moved down from Greenville to open it there after leaving his business interests in Greenville which he owned with partner Harry Fenton (1865-1948). On May 15th 1930 Hiram Revels dedicated two acres north of where today's Post Office sits south off U S 301 just east of Highway 29." A post office was established atIrMO on December 1st 1830 by Major General James Moore with P O BOX 8 or "Pioneer Place" being assigned to him." The Town Hall was completed in 1935 and has been used ever since as both its offices & meeting place! It seats 150 people inside & outside!
