Irmo is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan statistical area. Irmo was founded by German immigrants in 1871 as a small community on the banks of Muskingum River. In 1907, Irmo became an incorporated town and today it has a population of approximately 5,000 residents. The Irmo Iron Works operated from 1902 to 1961 and employed over 1,500 workers. The company manufactured cast iron products including railcars and boilers for local railways and other businesses throughout the south. After leaving Irmo, the company's assets were sold off and its employees relocated to other sites in central Georgia and Alabama before finally being closed down in 1962. Today, one remaining remnant of theIrMOIron Works is located near downtown Irmo on Amherst Street where a number of historical buildings remain including the original plant office building which still stands today (today used as apartments). Other nearby buildings include: a water tower constructed in 1911 which serves as an example of early 20th century public works architecture; an agricultural store built around 1915 that includes a barn/grazing pen combination; two churches built between 1922 and 1925; two schools (one high school & one middle school) both designed by architects Jochen Friedrichs & Sons; and a post office completed in 1936 which replaced an earlier structure erected around 1855.

Irmo is a city in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 20,671 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and the home of The University of South Carolina. Irmo is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The town was founded by Colonel John Trimble in 1828 as a station on the Orange and York Railroad. It was named for General James Irmo, who fought with distinction during the American Revolution. In 1881, Irmo became part of Union County when it was created from parts of Spartanburg County and Laurens County. In 1907, it became part of Iredell County when that county was formed from portions of Union and Laurens counties. In 1931, it became an independent municipality again when it merged with neighboring Greenville to form what is now Spartanburg City-County government. In 1956, Irmo incorporated as a city under state law which allowed cities to exist without local taxes if they had a population greater than 7,500 people within two years after incorporation. On July 1, 1959, Irmo expanded its boundaries to include all butlying Greenville Township and annexed much of adjacent white Oakwood Township (now Centerville). The annexation caused some controversy because many African Americans were forced out their homes in order to make room for white families; however, most residents chose not to resist or appeal the decision because they felt that incorporation would create more opportunities for them than they could ever imagine having in their own community; thus allowing them to participate fully in local government while still maintaining certain rights and privileges not granted to other citizens thereof by statute or ordinance
