Irmo is a small town in Greenville County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg-Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Irmo post Office was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed in 1965. The Irmo Manufacturing Company built a cotton gin and mill here in 1899. The company went bankrupt in 1917 but its assets were sold to the Spartanburg Telephone Company for $1 million. In 1928, Irmo's first high school opened, named after Confederate General Robert Ewell Cobb (1822-1920). The school served grades Pre-K through 8th grade until 1972 when it became part of the South Carolina High School Athletic Association. In 1978, Irmo Community College opened as a 4-year comprehensive university providing degree programs leading to all levels of professionalism including law enforcement and corrections; health sciences; business administration; engineering; architecture; human services; nursing/career counseling; information technology/telecommunications/information services management and more since its inception on November 3rd 1978!
