Hilton Head Island, located in the Atlantic Ocean about 8 miles off the coast of South Carolina, was first inhabited by the Timucua Indians. In 1663, English settlers arrived on Hilton Head Island and named it after Sir John Hilton, 1st Baronet of Lismore in Scotland. The island was leased to the British crown for 99 years beginning in 1775, during which time it was used as a military base and experimental farm. After being returned to American control in 1815, Hilton Head became a major tourist destination. In 1919, hotel developer James Wylie purchased the island and developed it into an all-purpose tourist resort that continues to be popular today. The earliest reference to Hilton Head is found in a deed from 1577 recorded in the "Surveyor's Books of North Carolina". It states that Juan de la Vega sold two leagues of land at Punta Gorda (now Pensacola) "to Mr. Thomas Lorde" for $100. Two years later, another deed from 1579 shows Richard Hakluyt sold 2/3 acre of land at what is now called Point Pleasant for £10 to Anthony Dutton Jr.. By 1600, there were several cabin sites on or near present-day Hilton Head Island with seven families living thereabouts. A few years later Captain John Smith explored and mapped the area around Roanoke Island while passing through South Carolina and noted that he had never seen anything like this place before or since! In 1663 King Charles II granted permission for 300 white men under the command of Admiral Christopher Newport to reside permanently upon Castle Hill on Hilton Head Island where they would build Fort Caroline as part of their defense against French attacks emanating from Louisiana and Acadia (present day Nova Scotia). The fort was completed in 1666 but only one man survived who described it as “a very low castell [sic] without any goodly buildings” due to its small size compared to other warships then stationed at Charleston Harbor! When news spread among English colonists that France had attacked Acadia they began construction on Fort Caroline soon after its completion – however within three months French forces destroyed both fortifications! Six hundred Virginians died as a result including Newport himself! The loss had such an impact upon English colonists that they decided not to pursue continued colonial efforts along coastal areas adjacent to Acadia until much later! Thereafter most English settlements were located inland instead!!!!! Although originally built timber frame structures only consisting of single rooms and no attached outbuildings survive extant examples of early eighteenth century HHI architecture; many believe these structures may have been erected using sandbagging techniques when hurricane season approached because logs could not be brought down onto shore during high tide!!! These days visitors can visit reconstructed barracks dating back to 1793 which served as barracks for Governors Beaufort & Johnston prior thereto; kitchen facilities dating back also TO THIS TIME ALSO…the Battery Keeper's House currently stands COMPLETE!!!!!! Additionally visitor attractions such as waterfalls & cliffs are available nearby making this an ideal location for tourists!!!!! Now enjoy your trip here!!!
