Hilton Head Island is a small, MacArthur-like island located in the Atlantic Ocean about midway between North Carolina and South Carolina. It measures just over three square miles and has a population of only 6,000 people. The island was first settled by English colonists in 1670 as part of the Plantation of Hilton Head on nearby Moore's Island. In 1814, King James I gifted the island to his nephew, Edmund "Ebenezer" Hilton (1768-1824), for his own exclusive use. At that time, Hilton Head was one of the most prosperous plantations in America. But during the 1830s and 1840s, following economic recession throughout much of the United States, Hilton Head became a struggling plantation with poor management and declining production. By 1847, only 5% of its original acreage remained in cultivation; by 1861 it had shrunk to 2%. In 1865, following Confederate defeat at Gettysburg during the American Civil War, Edmund "Ebenezer" Hilton III (1801-1865) sold what remained of his plantation to General John Custer (1825-1904) for $1 million dollars. Custer quickly converted it into an area known as "Custer's Valley." This new land became one of South Carolina's most important cotton plantations until it was taken over by white farmers after World War II. Because much of this early production was done on site rather than trucking around large shipments from other parts of America, Hilton Head remains one of the few places in America where you can see firsthand how cotton is grown here today. Today there are several thousand residents living on Hilton Head Island—mainly descendants of those who arrived here centuries ago or those who bought property subsequent to Custer's purchase. Many locals still dress conservatively because many slaves were brought here from Africa as indentured servants before being turned into agricultural workers; some African Americans also worked on adjoining plantations while they awaited their opportunity to freedom. Though tourism now dominates much aspectsof life on HHI – especially foodie dining – many Islanders maintain strong cultural ties to their homeland through music and art festivals (e.,the Arts Festival) each summer; traditional fishing tournaments AOCHAI every May/June; annual golf tournament at Pee Dee Resort & Casino; maritime history exhibitions at Coastal Battery State Historic Park…and more!

One of the most notable incidents that took place on Hilton Head Island during this time was when Confederate General Robert Ebert invaded Charleston during the Civil War. During this time period, Lieutenant Colonel James Longstreet commanded Confederate forces on Hilton Head Island and led them against Union forces under General Ulysses S Grant. As a result of this battle, much destruction occurred on both sides of the battlefield including extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure on Hilton Head Island
