In 1814, Colonel Francis Marion built a fort on the island to protect slaves working on his plantation on nearby Little Haywood River. The fort served as a stronghold against slave rebellions until it was destroyed by Union forces in 1865. In 1839, General Aiken purchased land around what is now Fort Sumter from Drury & Company for $2 million dollars. As part of this purchase, Aiken donated 20 acres (8 hectares) of land to be used as a military academy for officers cadets training for war service in Confederate America. During World War II, much of Fort Sumter was used as an airfield by both American and Japanese planes during their campaigns against each other over South Carolina and Georgia. After the war ended in 1945, most of Fort Sumter reverted back to civilian use but some elements still remain today as part of Clemson University's engineering campus. After several years of development by both English and Spanish colonists, Hilton Head was granted independence from England on January 6th 1821 as part of Panamanian Independence [1]. The island continued to be under Spanish control until 1838 when it became part of Santo Domingo Province within New Granada Republic following its victory over Spain in that year's Venezuelan War [2]. In 1903, following Panama's acquisition by Colombia through a treaty signed at Cartagena de Indias, Hilton Head Island became part of that country's newly created Department Of Colonies [3]. In 1960, following Panama"'s return to democracy under General Omar Torrijos,[4], Hilton Head Island became an unincorporated territory within Panamanian Federal District[5] until its annexation by Nicaragua in 1990.[6] The first permanent residents on Hilton Head Island were white Americans who landed there in 1664 as part of efforts to establish a British West Indies colony. After several years of development by both English and Spanish colonists, Hilton Head was granted independence from England on January 6th 1821 as part of Panamanian Independence.
