During World War I , many Americans who lived near Charleston enlisted in service . Many soldiers who served on Hilton Head Island went off board USS Constitution (1794) for duty at sea . One such soldier was Private Richard Matson who had volunteered for service but was discharged because he became ill early . On 10 September 1916 USS Constitution sailed from Charleston with 953 troops aboard including 43 Marines stationed ashore at Yacht Harbor Inlet (now known as Men’s Cay ) where they landed ontoshore after landing boats brought them ashore Most Americans disembarked safely but 3 Marines drowned while trying to cross an active hurricane tidepool called “Tidal Wave” During Hurricane Hazel (1952) nine sailors died when their boat capsized while trying to rescue survivors from SS Florida off Cozy Point Light Atoll On 14 October 1922 USS Sims relievedUSS Constitution offshore en route home following passage through South Carolina Straits during Hurricane Winni Some men stranded ashore upon return voyage found live coral banks whereupon collected fresh water daily To prevent further losses during storm surges higher waves Lifesaving equipment had not been available since ship left Boston harbor
