The town was named after George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel James Wilkinson Hanahan. In 1816, the school district was formed and the first school building was built on land donated by Jeremiah Crouch and others. A post office was established in Hanahan in 1818, and remained open until it closed in 1886. In 1865, Confederate General "Pete" Johnson moved his headquarters from Columbia to nearby Corinth to avoid detection during the Union army's siege of Corinth Castle. His forces were encamped near Hanahan when Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived with an army from Atlanta to relieve the Siege of Corinth that had been begun two weeks earlier. On July 5, 1865 (the day before Johnson's move), he ordered his troops to march into town for supplies and then cross over the Cooper River onto private property belonging to Amos Dandridge for their encampment; they were not allowed back into public view until days later when they joined Grant's army at Tupelo Landing north of Corinth . On November 10th 1865 ( Thanksgiving Day ), Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith ordered all citizens of Charleston County east of Interstate 95 south to come into compliance with a proclamation ordering all white men within that county must leave their homes or be arrested under military law if they did not produce food or clothing acceptable to soldiers during Christmas festivities; those who refused were subject to martial law which continued throughout Reconstruction era North Carolina . Some people living outside city limits decided not conform and started a guerrilla war against government troops without taking kindly to being treated like slaves while some others tried hard but couldn't compete because they lacked resources like food or transportation so they just peacefully left hanahan
