The name Hanahan comes from the Cherokee word "han-ahnta" meaning "the place where there are many huckleberries." A post office called Hanahan was established in 1876, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1984. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,229 people, 917 households, and 593 families residing in the town. The population density was 814.2 people per square mile (291.8/km²). There were 1,022 housing units at an average density of 309.0 per square mile (121.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.68% White, 0.24% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander., and 0.84% from two or more races
