Hanahan, South Carolina is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,992 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hanahan community began as a small cabin on the banks of the river in 1871. A post office was established in 1872, and by 1886 it had become a small town with a total population of just over 100. In 1896, an addition to the town was made when land along both sides of the Susquehanna River were purchased from Native Americans and settled by white people who named their new community after General John Blythe (1786-1853), one of history's most distinguished commanders during the American Revolution. As Hanahan grew its economy became more diversified - beginning with agriculture and later manufacturing - many citizens banded together to form what would become known as "The Towne League." This group fought for tax breaks and other benefits from government officials until 1903 when they successfully lobbied for statehood within South Carolina. In 1907, after years of hard work by The Towne League leaders and others in town, Hanahan residents voted to name their community after George Washington Harris (1846-1924). As Harris had been active in local politics since childhood and served as mayoralty candidate several times before becoming governor of South Carolina in 1913 - making him one of only two people ever to hold that distinction - his name quickly became synonymous with this thriving center on the Susquehanna River. Harris died suddenly less than two months into his term as governor; however, his legacy lives on through Hanahan's annual Memorial Day parade which attracts thousands of viewers each year from all aroundSouth Carolina.

In 1837, Hanahan was incorporated as a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. The town was named for General James H. Hanahan, who had represented the state in the United States Congress. In 1853, Hanahan became one of the seven townships in Cabarrus County that were designated as part of the newly formed Charlotte Towne System. The first settler on land comprising present day Hanahan was John Crouse who arrived in 1792 according to pioneer records and built a cabin on what is now known as Spring Street which he named "Crouse's Corner". He also planted white oak trees which grew so tall they blocked most of the light from Landing Creek so he had to build a barn to store his goods while waiting for better days; this led him to name his corner "Town Hall" because he could no longer see anything over his possessions! A post office operated at "Hanahan" from 1794-1825; its ZIP code at that time was 82022 . John Hetherington settled about 1800 on lands near present day Gaston and changed his name to "Hetherington’s Corner." He platted lots here including one now known as Main Street and built a log cabin which served as county seat until 1824 when Gaston began receiving official recognition from Raleigh & Tryon officials as an independent town separate from Raleigh
Hanahan was founded in 1793 by Colonel John Hanahan. The town was named for him and his wife, Hannah. The first store in the town was operated by Elisha Goodloe. In 1827, the town had a population of seventy-two people and a post office. The first school in the town was opened in 1829. A gristmill was built in 1836 and a saw mill in 1840. A blacksmith shop and wagon wheel factory were also built in this time period.
