Hanahan is located in the Ashley County, South Carolina. It was founded in 1817 by General Daniel Boone as a post office named for his father-in-law, Colonel John Hanahan. The population of Hanahan grew to over 1,000 residents by 1830. In 1835, the town passed through an act which changed its name to Hanahan and Trustees formed a school board. The first public school opened in 1836; it was later renamed the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Health Sciences. In 1865, the town passed an act which changed its name to Hanahan again and a new courthouse was built. The population of Hanahan decreased from 1,000 residents in 1850 to just over 100 residents by 1860 but it increased again to almost 300 residents by 1870 before declining again during the late 19th century. In 1900, it had only 100 inhabitants left and it closed down completely due to lack of business activity. It reopened in 1922 as a private high school with vocational training programs for local farmers. Today, there are no active businesses or residences within the limits of Hanhan and it is now used as a interim site for Augusta High School during summer terms when that school is not available at its original location within city limits

Hanahan was a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, until the early 20th century. It is now part of Greenville, South Carolina. The town was founded in 1827 by James Hanahan and his wife Susannah. The name "Hanahan" comes from the Shawnee word hanawa meaning "a place where deer can be hunted." In 1829, the town had only 10 residents and two stores. By 1840, it had grown to around 100 people and ten businesses. The town's first school was built in 1841. A mill was erected in 1847 and began operating that year. A post office was established at Hanahan in 1850. The town's most important development came during the American Civil War. On April 14, 1861, Confederate Brigadier General David Cushing arrived at Hanahan with orders to set fire to all of the buildings in the town because they were harboring Union forces who he believed were preparing to attack him next week. However, no such attack occurred; instead Cushing destroyed all of the towns' buildings except for one which he used as his headquarters while besieging Fort Sumter on nearby Charleston Harbor. In 1865, after South Carolina became a federal state under Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Hanahan's population increased to about 200 people due to new arrivals from Georgia and other parts of Southern America seeking political asylum before Restoration policies were enacted limiting free black migration throughout much of America started taking hold (this policy would later become known as Jim Crow). In 1870-71 there was an effort spearheaded by local politician Samuel Wilcox to rename the community after President Ulysses S Grant so that it could better reflect its once large slaveholding past (Grant himself would never visit or interact with Hanahan). However this proposal failed due largely to opposition from many locals who felt that any change would help white supremacists like former Confederate General Prentiss Pickett stay power within their community while black Americans struggled economically under Reconstruction rule while also being hated by many whites for their ancestors' part in slavery/torture/murder etc.; some even went so far as calling for violence against those planning any renaming campaign or anyone involved with it should they occur without prior warning! During World War II much activity took place at Hanahan including production of munitions by Allied Forces using local mills although few residents actually lived there during wartime; most worked either at nearbyGreenville mills or elsewhere within Spartanburg County munitions production capacity during peacetime years when land remained available locally not being confiscated by military authorities like during wartime periods when land seizures became more common On December 7th 1946 United States Senator Strom Thurmond visitedHanahan with then First Lady Elizabeth Hardaway Jackson hosting along side her husband Robert Flemming who served as US Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary To Japan 1946-1948 & 1951-1954) having been previously elected Mayor Of Greenville 1947-1950) Also present were Representative Julius Henson (D-SC), Mrs Wilson Witherspoon (D-SC), Mrs Addie Reese (D-SC), Mrs Alice Mclntyre (D- SC) & Dr John Ladd(Dr.)
