A congressman from South Carolina from 1861 to 1865, he served as U.S. Minister to Spain in 1869-70 and 1870-71; U.S. Ambassador to Italy in 1873-75; and Secretary of State under President James Buchanan in 1877-81. In 1886 he was elected governor of Florida, serving until 1889 when he resigned to run for the United States Senate seat vacated by Democrat James K. Polk. He won the election but lost re-election in 1890 to Republican John Sherman Whitehurst
Hanahan was founded by General James H. Hanahan in 1823 as a small settlement on the Appomattox River. The town sprang up around a canal that connected the river to larger towns and markets. By 1827, Hanahan had an population of 350 people. In 1829, the Confederate States of America was founded, and Hanahan became its capital. In 1861, Confederate forces captured Hanahan and all of western South Carolina, putting an end to its short-lived autonomy.
