In 1865, Daniel Hanahan opened a small optical store in the town of Hanahan, South Carolina. In 1873, he partnered with W. T. Pearson and the two began selling telescopes and other optical equipment to farmers and others in the area. By 1886, they had built an extensive business empire that included a factory for manufacturing optical products. They continued to sell optics until at least 1951 when their company merged into Raytheon Company
Hanahan is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County and is served by Hanahan High School, which is located in the town center. The Hanahan Post Office opened on December 17, 1881, as "Hanahan". On January 15, 1907, it was renamed "Winchester". It was redesignated "Hanahan" on April 1, 1951. The current name derives from James P. Hanahan Jr., who served as mayor from 1984 to 1990 and 1992 to 1996 and as a delegate to the South Carolina General Assembly from 1991 to 1997. The town has two churches: First Baptist Church (founded in 1881) and Methodist Episcopal Church (established in 1895). There are also several businesses including the Walmart Supercenter which opened in 2006 and the Carpenter's Shop which has been open since 1903. In 2007, there were also plans for construction of a new high school that would be located within walking distance of all of the businesses in Hanahan along with an amphitheater/auditorium/library complex called Parkview Campus that would include a movie theater and restaurants inside and outside walls that could accommodate up to 4500 people per event.
