After the war, many people returned to their homes but most of Dickson's mill remained idle because it could not compete with new mills that had been founded in neighboring towns such as Greenville and Columbia. In 1925, Mrs. Anna Fenton Waddell donated land for a high school which was dedicated in 1929 by Governor Jeptha Kennedy Holcomb II upon his election as president of South Carolina. In 1960s and 1970s, much development took place aroundHanahan including an increase in housing prices and a significant increase in jobs related to manufacturing companies such as Continental Airlines (now Delta Airlines) and Alcoa (now aluminum company Alcoa).
