Hanahan is a small town located in the mountainous region of South Carolina. The population was 9,724 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheboro, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hanahan is named for General James Hurst Hanahan who fought in the American Revolution and served as a colonel in the Continental Army. The town was founded by Colonel John A. Hanahan and his family in 1819. The first post office was established in 1825. In 1828, Colonel John A. Hanahan donated land to build a school which now serves as the town square. In 1865, General Johnston's army camped near Hanahan and many of his men died from fever while on their march to battle against Johnston's forces. This event is commemorated by a monument that stands outside of town hall stand erected by local businesses and organizations along with an annual festival honoring General Johnston’s memory which takes place on National July 4th weekend. The present day economy of Hanahan relies heavily upon agriculture and horticulture since much of the land within its boundaries is devoted to these activities either directly or via adjoining farming communities that supportHanahan's agricultural production including Hillcrest, Springdale, Summerhill, Larkin Grove, Celtic Gardens Farms (Gardens), Allendale Farms (Farms), New Hope Plantations Nursery & nursery products business operated by Mrs Betty Smith until her retirement in 2006; Heritage Watersports conducted water skiing operations from two resorts constructed on property northeast of town; both properties were sold during 2005-2006 season; also operates 2 restaurants: one off Main Street with live music nightly 7pm-2am (weekends only); one restaurant off High Street with breakfast daily 8am-2pm; 3 grocery stores: 1 large general store open 6a-9p Mon thru Fri & 10a-12p Sat thru Sun; 1 small store open 9am-5pm Mon thru Fri; 1 convenience store open 5pm-midnight Wed thru Fri.; 2 gas stations: one serving fuel products including cigarettes & light cigars and candy bars while others sell items such as soft drinks/emergency supplies etc.; also has several antique shops/vintage clothing stores

Hanahan is a small town located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 1,966 at the 2010 census. Hanahan has a history dating back to 1799 when it was known as "Winchester". Winchester served as the capital of South Carolina from 1796-1800 and again from 1801-1812. It was here that General Francis Marion fought off British forces in 1814 during the War of 1812. The town started to grow after an agreement was made between several local farmers and Congressman James Ketchum in 1865 for a post office to be established in Hanahan. The first post office opened in 1886, and growth continued until 1914 when prohibition caused an decrease in mail volume and residents had to rely on other means of communication including telephone, radio, and carriages for their needs. In 1935, construction began on what would become Hanahan's first frame building which still stands today as a commercial property used by locals for various purposes including storage, farm work, and rural school busing services. In the early 21st century,Hanahan has seen some redevelopment with new businesses being established such as a grocery store and Chinese restaurant which have helped increase economic opportunities for the community while also preserving its traditional character traits such as two-story frame buildings with white trimming and hands-on involvement by its citizens within their communities. One aspect that has not changed much over time is the importance placed upon education within Hanahan; since it became an unincorporated community it has always been one of its main priorities to provide quality education for its citizens through both primary/elementary schools as well as higher education institutions nearby which can help prepare them for career opportunities outside of their homes or hometowns once they achieve adulthood."
