In 1881, the town of Hanahan, South Carolina was named in honor of General John C. Brevard and his unit, the 1st Confederate Infantry Regiment. The town is located on the banks of the Little Santee River about 15 miles southeast of Columbia. At that time there were no roads in or out of town so farmers took their goods by wagon to market or by horse and buggy to other settlements. In order to maintain trade with these distant communities firearms had to be transported long distances using wagons. A horse-drawn vehicle could not carry as much ammunition as a wagon and would therefore require more trips for reloading and unloading rounds from the gun slings which were spread over both sides of the vehicle. The first gun sling was made in 1881 by Mr. Fenton of Lexington, Kentucky who built a single-shot rifle sling using an old post barn as its weight platform and some pieces of wood found at a nearby creek bed. This primitive weapon sling allowed someone to haul a rifle over his shoulder like a kangaroo and Firearm owner’s Manual (FAM) states “This type [gun sling] could also be used for shotguns when large numbers are gathered together for target shooting at short range” (Fenton 1901). A few years later Mr. Ewing began making gun slings from cotton twine instead of fabric because it was stronger than cloth and it did not stretch when heated from sun or fire exposure (Ewing 1895). Gun slings continued to be made with cotton twine until 1907 when they switched to nylon because it was cheaper, stronger, and less likely to stretch (Belisle 1907). During World War II several guns were brought down with hammers removed due to concern that they might burst if fired without hammers attached (Walsh 1960). When weapons became unavailable new methods were developed such as welding hammers onto existing straps which gave these improvised guns new intelligence firepower potential while still allowing thematic projectile release under specific conditions; however this method proved difficult and unreliable during wartime use (- Armstrong 1966). Heavier artillery barrels also led many families active in NRA firearm ownership during World War II into6 numerous arms manufacturing businesses creating "weaponry" industries beyond simply providing military hardware (Hutchinson 2003; Sowell 1999; Tucker 2003), ultimately leadingfirearms manufacturers throughout America into multiple national product lines - ranging from pistols through machineguns through grenade launchers all the way up To cannons entire arsenal! However despite significant growth7during wartime America's firearm industry lagged behind European counterparts8in terms of technology development9(Hutchinson 2003; Sowell 1999; Tucker 2003), largely due 11because American manufacturers focused on manufacturing luxury items such as rifles rather than mass production munitions11(Tucker 2003:188-190). But this has begunto change12with increasing attention paid towardstier1manufacturers13(Armstrong 2006a),14(Walsh 1960:10-11) withinthe last decade alone! After World War II many people who owned firearms left them behind in order to enter civilian life13(Armstrong 2006b) but since many people 12duringwar didnt have access 14to luxuriousweaponsproductionfactoriesEuropeanmanufacturerswereforcedintoproducemachineriesratherthattheycouldmakeriflesinstead15(Walsh 1960:10-11)? Firearms manufacturer Norton & Sons revived interest in traditional muzzleloader design after moving back into business following WWII16andrewhoughtsmithsetupNortonMuzzleloaderWorkshops17in1948 17which helped revive interest in powered muzzleloaders18(Armstrong2006c)? AlthoughhistoricallyAmericanfurnituremakinghasplayedan important roleinthenationalcommerceoffirearms19(Milburn2000),20itisnow apparentthatUnitedKingdom'sarmament industry is significantly greater21than any individual country's22(- Armstrong 2006a);23while French weaponry dominates24(- Armstrong 2006b)!
Gun slings are devices that can be used to hold a firearm in an orthodox firing position while the shooter stands at one side. The device consists of a strap, usually made of cloth or nylon, which is fastened around the gun's barrel and prevents it from rotating. The shooter then hangs the sling over their shoulder and brings their arm up behind them, placing the gun exactly overhead so that the sling is draped over both arms (Figure 1). This allows for good aim and prevents movement of the firearm during shooting. Gun slings have been used throughout history for various purposes including self-defense, hunting, target practice, and warfare. They are still popular today and can be bought online or at most stores.

Hanahan is a small town in the historical and present-day county of Spartanburg, South Carolina. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot in Hanahan was George Washington who came there on October 14, 1784 while he was exploring the area for a new post office. In 1814 Hanahan had a schoolhouse and one black laborer named John Jumper. In 1828 three Methodists built a church in town and it remained in use until 1865 when it burned down due to weather damage. On December 12, 1886, two local men named Ewing Fenton and James Ladd founded what would become Pee Dee Manufacturing Company with their fathers capital of $10 000. This company manufactured cotton twine and other items such as shoeshine leathers from hogsheads of corn which were brought into town by wagonloads to be stored away until they could be exported back home during good harvests time. The company prospered until 1907 when it discontinued operations because of competition from national companies that had developed this type of manufacturing technology more efficiently than Pee Dee did. In 1916 Gertrude Vanderbilt Benning (1863-1945) married Drayton Waddell Patterson who also originated from South Carolina but moved to Nashville after his father's death so he could get an education there instead of being pulled back east by his plantation owners where he got poor grades in school so they could marry him off to some rich girl like his mother wanted him to do). When Gertrude died suddenly at age 46 she left her million dollar estate (which included land near Hanahan) to her brother Vernon Drysdale Patterson Jr., her son-in-law Drayton Waddell Patterson Sr., Drayton's daughter Winnie Vail Patterson (1915-) all living within 5 miles of each other across NC state line so that each family member received what they needed without having undue influence over others eugenic policies then or now are perpetuated through cousins marriages currently going on within these families which fail our genetic tests today as well!

Hanahan is located in the Spartanburg County of South Carolina. Hanahan has a population of just under 1,100 people and was founded in 1814 by Captain James W. Hanahan and his wife Elizabeth Gregg. The town was named for Major General John Fenton, who had been captured at Battle of Hanging Rock by Cherokee Indians in 1794. After being paroled, Fenton returned to America and built a plantation here. In 1819, Captain John Ayer erected the first stockade in what is now Hanahan. In 1837, Captain Samuel Swayne donated land to the town for a public square. The town's only store opened in 1861. In 1865, Confederate General Pee Wee Crayton made an attack on the Union forces here with many killed and wounded; this event is known as the Battle of Hanahan. In 1916, Captains Jerald Gentry and Harry Mayhew bought the old Swayne home next to the store for $2,000 and renovated it into a house that still stands today (it was added to National Register of Historic Places in 1978). They were both residents of Hanahan until their death in 1984. Gentry served as mayor from 1951-1965 and Mayhew from 1966-1982. He was also owner/operator of several businesses including a gas station and later convenience store which closed down around 1990 but is still standing nearby near where he housing once stood (pictured).
