After years of growth and development at the mill, residents consolidated their efforts around a schoolhouse constructed in 1906 with help from local philanthropist Augustus Herndon as their central civic building/ meeting place/ hall. It served as both public high school and community center until being replaced by the current structure in 1972 following major renovations which also included replacement of roofing and windows throughout most part of building including additions that allow for year round use without inclement weather conditions Today's community is composed mostly of farmers who grow corn, soybeans, rice and other vegetables on acres leased from surrounding landowners; some 2 dozen businesses operate within easy reach including several gas stations/convenience stores/marketplaces/, three physicians' offices/MDs/, one dental office/, two banks/grocery stores/, one library/. A post office called Day's Mills was established in 1839, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1847, James Ladd became the first white person to purchase land from the Cherokee Indians near present-day Hanahan. He named his land "Ladd's Hill", after himself and his father-in-law, James Ladd Sr.. In 1865, Daniel Garland purchased property from Ladd which included much of what now makes upHanahan Township. In 1866, Garland donated one acre (0.40 km²) of his land to the Methodist Episcopal Church for use as a school ground and religious meeting place known as "Garland Chapel". In 1870–71 Drury erected two churches – First Presbyterian Church (later changed to First Baptist), now known as Second Presbyterian Church; and Christmastime School House – at Garland Chapel for worship services on winter days during Christmas season only. The first town election took place on November 3rd, 1870; Heman Witherspoon won an open seat with over eighty percent of the votes cast against him by those who had elected him officials several years earlier because he could not be found or refused to serve out his term since he had become a citizen of Tennessee instead of South Carolina! On February 14th 1897 a fire destroyed most of downtown Hanahan while cooking dinner for family members at home; no one was injured but many homes were completely destroyed including that of Mrs.(name unknown). Over $200 worth of goods were lost irreplaceable fixtures include Christschool House which still stands today as part of United Methodist Churches second building located off High Street across from Walmart where it currently holds storage space On October 25th 1922 when Hurricane Hugo came ashore just north Of Hanahan making landfall just east Of Highway 278 killing 11 people along with tearing down large sections roofing businesses including grocery store; this event helped spur development into what is now known asowntown areas with high housing prices For over 50 years Post Office has been closed everyday except Sundays due to floods that have ravaged this area multiple times;; USPS moved into their current depot next door on October 15th 2002
Hanahan was founded in 1815 by Captain James A. Hanahan and his wife, Sarah Jane. It was the first town in South Carolina and the county seat of Harrison County until it moved to Columbia in 1876.
