Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by planters and traders from North Carolina and Virginia. In 1838, it became known as "Hanahan's Ferry" after a ferry crossing near present-day Hanahan on the Broad River. The community name changed to Hanahan in 1852 when its post office was moved to the new town site. In 1862, Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant at short notice while they were besieging Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor; early indications were that Early would march into town and take it by force if he reached it first. Confederate Major General Jumper Ewell refused to allow Early to enter Hanahan without an engagement and withdrew his army instead about two miles north of town on High Street. A battle ensued which resulted in three Union dead and nine captured; however, Ewell himself escaped uninjured with his troops back into Charleston Heights before dawn the next day (). Aftermath of this skirmish helped further develop Hanathan's reputation as a lawless frontier outpost frequented by outlaws such as Jesse James and Billy Rayburn (). In 1865, Dutch Reeder bought land east of town from John Brown for $2 per acre (the sale took place just prior to Browns raid on Harper's Ferry). This property formed what is now called Reeder's Valley betweenHanahan Road south of Interstate 95E and Old Hwy 111E both leading eastward towards Columbia; today this valley covers much of rural Spartanburg County between I-95W à la Getzville Avenue south border then US 11E terminating at I-95W again north border) In 1916 construction began on Spartanburg Women’s College (now Southern University), one of several colleges built during World War I along military bases around the country; enrollment grew rapidly from 500 women in 1915 to over 10,000 women by 1923 . After World War II ended there continued rapid growth with many residents moving into centralColumbia for jobs during the postwar expansion period ; growth slowed somewhat following deindustrialization but has since resumed .
