Gun hammer history in Hanahan, South Carolina began in the early 1800s when a man named John S. Hammond built a tool shop on the corner of Main and Third Streets. From this workshop, Hammond started production of gun hammers which he sold to local farmers and hunters. Hammer production continued until around 1860 when Hammonds shop became an open-air market. In 1865, Hammond sold his business to J.P. Beaulieu who continued hammer production until 1869 when it was purchased by Aiken Tool Works Incorporated (ATW). ATW produced HAMMERS PRODUCTS until 1923 when it merged with Walthall Machine & Tool Company to form The Walthall Corporation. The company manufactured HAMMERS products through 1923 before selling off its assets to Remington Arms Corporporated in 1929. With the inception of World War II,Hammonds Hammer factory was used for making munitions during the war period. After the war,hammer manufacturing resumed at Hammonds factory but stopped again in the late 1940s due to dwindling resources and competition from other manufacturers. In 1957,Hammonds Hammer factory reopened as a part of South Carolina Arsenal Corporation under new ownership and continued production until 1969 when it was closed down again due to economic reasons and lack of demand for hammers among both consumers and industry alike. Today, only some remains of oldHammonds Hammer factory still standing with remnants of tooling that once adorned its walls

The town was first settled in 1792 by James Hanahan and his wife Sara. They named their new settlement after Johnathan Hanahan, one of the original proprietors of this section of South Carolina. James and Sara had two children: Sarah and Jonathan. In 1802, they bought land from Mr. John Silliman for $160 cash and began to build a log cabin on what is now Main Street. That same year, they also erected a frame house which still stands today as the Administration Building for Hanahan Schools Incorporated. James and Sara were married in 1810 and had six more children: James Jr., Daniel (Daniel), Hannah (Hannah),Jonathan (Jonathan), Stephen (Stephen), Ebenezer (Ebenezer) and Susannah (Susannah). In 1814, when James died suddenly, his wife Sara took over management of their farmstead with her five remaining children living there with her until she died in 1824 at the age of 76 years old. After her death, assets passed to her three youngest children who all became farmers themselves; however Ebenezer did not take up farming but instead engaged in mercantile pursuits until his death in 1865 at the age of 73 years old; Susannah continued to live on the farm until she too passed away in 1924 at 79 years old. They finally got around to building their own schoolhouse in 1875 when Reverend Corder announced he was going back east preaching Christianity while he was hereabouts ..............
