Hanahan is a small town in the U.S. state of South Carolina, located on the Pee Dee River. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Hanahan is part of the Greenville-minority-towns micropolitan statistical area. The community was founded by white settlers in 1811 and named for William Hanahan, an early settler. It became a black village in 1907 and incorporated as a town in 1959. In 2000, it was renamed for James A. The Hanahan community was founded in 1817 on the Fincastle Plantation, about 2 miles (3 km) southeast of present-day Hanahan. The original settlers were white indentured servants from Virginia. They built a cabin and began raising crops. In 1822, the land that now makes up the town was purchased by Captain John C. Smythe, who had been commissioned to explore the area. Smythe named his new town after his father-in-law, General James A. Hanahan, commander of United States forces in South Carolina during the War of1812. Hanahan grew slowly until 1840, when a railroad was built through the town and business began to grow rapidly. By 1865, there were about 100 residents and six stores. In 1890, an express train service arrived in town and soon made it a major stop for travelers coming from Charleston or New York City. By 1920, there were over 200 people living in Hanahantown and eight businesses operated along Main Street. The last store closed in 1984; however, some artifacts from that era remain at nearby Simpsonville Historical Museum
