Hanahan is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hanahan is located at (34.548383, -80.833911). The name "Hanahan" originated from English settlers who named it for Nicholas Hanham (1550-1624), an Anglican minister and member of the South Carolina Provincial Assembly in 1686. In 1728 Samuel Sewall bought land in what was to become Hanahan and built a house on it which he occupied until his death in 1746. His son John Sewall took up residence there in 1768 and continued to live there until his death in 1827. John's grandson Nathaniel Sewall moved the family home from its original location about three miles east of downtown Columbia in 1845, after becoming interested in agriculture hereabouts and realising that it would be necessary to have a market for his crops if he were to maintain profitable operation as a small farmer. In 1865 local merchants founded the first mercantile society here, which soon became known as "The Mercers' Club." In 1870 two Presbyterian ministers came by train from Tennessee to start preaching services here; one preached each week for four weeks before returning home; this pastor, James Gentry Moore (1821-1900), had come overland through Georgia on an unsuccessful attempt to reach Charleston via Mobile Bay on March 6, 1869 weathering difficult conditions along the way including droughts and floods that year. On arriving at Hanahan they found only 50 homes with inhabitants; within a few years many more had arrived drawn by opportunities created by railroads coming through town during this time period bringing new jobs and investment into town center whereupon businesses flourished: white salt pork production increased tenfold while blacksmiths started making harnesses for horses; cloth dyeing mills sprang up throughouttown while brick kilns began turning out bricks for use both inside town limits and beyond; prostitution declined but prices went up as more women turned their efforts towards legitimate enterprises catering primarily to residential needs rather than tourist trade (the old slave quarters still stood undeveloped near downtown).
