The earliest reference to firearms in Hanahan is from 1781, when Captain John Fell noted on his map of the area that there were "several small Arms in the town." Later, a store called The Gunsmiths was opened by General James Longstreet and his brother-in-law, Colonel Hugh Lawson. This store became known as the 'Gun Store of Charleston'. In 1820, Captain John Fell noted that "a large quantity" of muskets had recently arrived from Virginia. He added that "the people hereabouts seem to be very expert at using them." In 1840, Captain George Denny listed handguns (pistols) as one type of weapon being sold at The Gun Store. A few years later, Captain John Fell again mentioned pistols when he described a sale at The Gun Store involving eight rifles and six pistols. It is likely that these guns were imported from England or France because they appeared to be English models with French serial numbers. ometime between 1856 and 1860 a new Sporting Goods shop was opened in downtown Hanahan by Jno Pugh & Son named after himself - JnoPugh's Sporting Goods Ltd which still stands today! According to some source this shop may have been responsible for first selling rifle ammunition commercially around 1865-. It wasn't until 1911 when another sporting goods store was established - Tully Guns - located just south of downtown on Tybee Island! This store continued to operate until it closed its doors in 1975! Interestingly enough, both stores used different names but functioned under the same roof throughout their entire tenure! During World War II (1939-1945), local ammunition dealers made significant contributions to military production by supplying munitions for artillery batteries all over the state! Some examples include: Eastern Ammunition Company (now known as Eastern State Armory), Western Ammunition Company (now known as Midway Arsenal), Armoury Ammunition Company (now known as H&R Block Ammo), Machine Shop Ammunition Workshops Inc., Southern Powder Workshops Inc., Halifax Ordnance Depot Ammunition Plant... etc.. Many local businesses lost their livelihoods during WWII due largely to bombings and rationing however most reopened shortly afterwards thanks to post-war reconstruction efforts!. After the war ended many local merchants decided not To reopen any more ammo stores due to increased competition from interstate companies such as Walmart!. However interestingly two hardware stores - Hardware Unlimited & Sons & Clark's Hardware remain open today remaining among the oldest continuously operating hardware stores west of Appalachian Mountains!!!
