Hanahan is a town in Spanish Fork County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Hanahan River. The first permanent settler in what is now Hanahan was James Jackson who platted the town in 1819. In 1824, Daniel Boone and his party of men founded a small village called Boonesborough about 12 miles west of Hanahan. In 1827, Lafayette Smith built a cabin near present-day Harrisonburg on the stream that flows through the town. This was to be the start of what would become known as "Smith's Ford". In 1840, John Capps built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in Hanahan and named it after himself. A post office was established at Cappsville in 1846 and operated until 1865; it was then moved to Hanahan and renamed Mount Pleasant Post Office. In 1851–1852 James Settle settled in what is now rural part ofHanahan and platted an area around his mansion which became known as Settle's Landing or Settlers' Landing because so many settlers came there to purchase land during this time period. The townsite name has since been changed to its current form: Hanahan Township. It wasn't until 1857 that railroad construction began through Spanish Fork County and by 1860, all but one mile of track had been laid throughhanahan township with only a few miles left to be completed before the line crossed into Cherokee County. At this point much development ceased due to lack of funding however some homes were built soon afterwards such as Mrs Gail McGee's home on present dayHarrington Road which still stands today! The last rail line crossing into Cherokee County occurred just south ofpresent dayHanaganvierville when that line stopped running completely in 1971!!

Hanahan was founded in 1847 by Presbyterian missionaries named John and James Hanahan. The town was named after Dr. Edward Hanahan, who served as president of South Carolina College from 1875 to 1882. The first store in the town was built on the corner of Depot and Church Streets in 1848. A post office called Hanahan was established in 1850, and remained In operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first school in Hanahan opened on October 1, 1851, when five young ladies from Lexington Female Academy (now Ashley University) were teacher/students at a cost of $50 each plus services rendered by Mrs. Fannie Willard (later Mrs. Hargrave). Classes were held for three weeks with instruction being confined to reading and writing as well as arithmetic and geometry; but soon other branches of learning became popularly available through occasional visits from teachers from nearby towns like Greenville or Lancasterburgh; so that within six months there were eight students attending school weekly with no teacher present save one “night watch” girl who attended during Sundayschool hours under the direction of a Mrs Howe; this early system persisted until 1862 when an addition of two rooms permit us to now offer classes both morning and evening sessions.] In 1860–61 there followed an increase in business due largely to increased traffic along the new plank road connecting Charleston with Hilton Head Island via Beaufort[1] – see also: "Review" dated 11/5/1860 – which caused even more travelers to seek out accessible wildflower gardens located near either side of Highway 82 eastbound just north of town center; these gardeners did much to promote tourism around this time including planting over sixty species bulbs for sale at local markets throughout central SC On December 10th 1865 General John C Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House & all Confederate troops must leave our State unconditionally! #SCHistory pic.twitter.com/V3bCY0r7v8 — Ashley County (@AshleyCountySA) November 9, 2018 One result attributable to economic development has been an increase in housing prices throughout downtownHanahan since about 1990 although some single-unit dwellings have continued to be offered for sale .
