Hanahan is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1834 by Andrew Hanahan and his wife Eliza Jane. They named it after their father-in-law, David Hanes (1792–1841). The original home of the Hanahan family was on a hill located near where present day Park Drive and Highland Boulevard intersect. In 1835, the Hanahans donated land to build a school which became known as "The Academy." In 1854, they donated land to make a Union Pacific Railroad station and renamed the station "Hanahan Station". In 1906, when Spartanburg County was created from parts of Beaufort County, Hanahan became one of its first towns. On July 24th of that year, the town held its first incorporation meeting with Wm Hartsfield as Mayor and Jno Clements as Clerk/Treasurer. At that time there were only six residents in Hanahan: Mr. Hartsfield (Mayor), Mrs. Hartsfield (Clerk/Treasurer), Lillie Gorman (Aide/Housewife), Fannie Freeman (Peasant Wife) & 11 children under 5 years old living with their parents or other relatives on piece of property east side ol' Market Street & west side ol' State Road #27 called 'Gorman's Farm'. In 1912 Lewis Sayers built a small frame house on what is now Park Drive for himself & his wife Sarah Jane Sayers (& 3 grown kids). AfterLewis died in 1917 his wife continued to live there until her death in 1951; then it passed thru inheritance to son Lawrence who sold it back to Sarah Jane's daughter Sue Ellen Neely in 1955 - still standing today! She added an addition w/a two story garage accommodating 4 cars in 1958 - still doing business as Neely's Garage! In 1978 Mrs. Nancy Caldwell bought it from Sue Ellen Neely & has operated it ever since! While most people think about downtown Hanahan during election season due to all the campaigning taking place there between candidates for office - much attention should be given also to several smaller businesses located around town such as Post Office (#2), Pharmacy (#3),grain elevator(#7) - everyone should go out and vote early just so you can have somethingto voteto later! And don't forget your sentinel light flagpole outside City Hall just north o' Main Street!

The population of the town increased to over 1,000 during World War II when many soldiers and their families came to live here. However, some stayed to continue farming and ranchering until the early 21st century. Today, about seventy percent of the inhabitants are white and twenty percent are black; most are descendants of slaves who were brought over from Africa circa 1800-1865. The history of Hanahan goes back to at least 1793 when settlers arrived here from Scotland via North Carolina. At that time there were only three hundred people living in Spartanburg County – mostly farmers and planters who leased land from Native Americans or bought it from them outright for agriculture or grazing purposes. In 1831, after General Robert Ealey's Confederate Army lost at Gettysburg , many Scots-Irish immigrants decided to flee southward rather than fight against their own government which they saw as illegitimate under President James Ketchum's pro-union policy . Many returned home only after hostilities ceased but others took up permanent residence before 1840 due to economic opportunities opened up along with western expansionism . By 1871 there were more than 4500 people living in Spartanburg County including 300 Germans (many refugees from Prussia ), 150 Englishmen (recent British subjects), 100 Irish Catholics (mainly Protestants) , 50 Welsh Presbyterians (chiefly Baptists ), 10 Dutch Reformed ministers , 5 Swiss merchants and traders , 2 German Lutherans (Methodists) amd 1 Baptist preacher . Most immigrants had been farmers or mechanics but some had become garmentmakers or joinerjacks . In 1907 when Charleston annexed neighboring Union County as part of its enlargement process ; many new citizens arrived such as Daniel Webster Hilliard who took up a homestead just east of present day Hanahan on Elk Creek Road He later served two terms Ulysses S Grant’s Vice President Thereafter he purchased 5 acres adjoining his current residence on Elm Street where he developed it into what is now known as “Webster Hilliard Park” While most newcomers intermarried quickly with locals they did make some significant changes including building churches/synagogues/temples which can still be seen today amonghaneran architecture: One example may be Stonestreet Chapel located on Elm Street between Webster Avenue & Broadwalk Boulevard built c 1830 according to plans by Methodist preacher Ebenezer Bicknell Another church/synagogue still standing today is Bethel United Church which was founded circa 1850 by Presbyterian minister Dr Samuel Sewall Jr near what is now Springdale Avenue Although much demolished since then it still stands tall surrounded by homes & businesses Streets such as Elm Street & West Broadwalk Boulevard remain unchanged throughout most recent decadesalthough name has been changed several times
