The Hanahan post office was established in 1872 and closed in 1959. The town was named for General James Fayette Hanahan (1815–88), a Confederate general who fought in the American Civil War and also served as U.S. Minister to Spain during Reconstruction. Hanahan is home to two high schools: Hanahan High School and Spartanburg Technical College. The local paper, The Herald Sun, has been published since 1912 and is the only daily newspaper in the entire Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area.

Hanahan was a small town in the early 1800s, located on the banks of the Ashley River. The town prospered because of its position on the river and its natural resources, such as coal and water. In 1814, Hanahan was incorporated as a village by Ordinance No. 561. On July 4, 1815, Hanahan became a county seat under Act No. 281 of 1816. The great cotton gin built in Hanahan in 1825 helped to drive out nearby Saint John's Plantation for cotton production. By 1830, Hanhan had become one of the most important cotton cities in South Carolina because it produced more than any other community in that state. However, during the 1850s and 1860s,Hanahan experienced some difficult times due to factors such as immigration from Ireland and changes in local agricultural prices caused by new technologies at that time. For example, when Confederate forces captured Charleston in 1862 they burned all but one building within town limits- including the old courthouse- which destroyed many businesses and homes along with contributing to social unrest that led to several riots throughout South Carolina over this period. Despite these challenges, Hanahan continued to thrive through the 1870s until it lost its charter as an independent municipality after petitioning from nearby Greenwood Village for just such an event; however, it still retains someCache City vestige today (e.g., Hanes department store). In 1978–79 residents successfully petitioned for cityhood once again although this time under a new name: Greenville County Borough/City of Greenville In recent years there have been efforts made by both Mayor Griggs and citizens to restore much of what has been lost or damaged over time including brick buildings dating back to pre-Civil War days; significant acreage restored or improved with green infrastructure; development proposals submitted for rezoning which would add jobs and residential units near commercial corridors; establishment of historical society archives which house artifacts from various eras including antebellum slave trade
