Greer is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greer was founded in 1851 by Oleander Greer and his wife Anna Smith. The first post office was established in Greer on March 14, 1852. The community name comes from English settlers Oleander Greer and Anna Smith who moved to the area in 1851 after meeting while prospecting for coal near modern day Greenville. The town's original plat was filed on October 10, 1851 with two other towns named Robeson and Laurence which were located east of modern day Spartanburg County limits. According to one source, "the land around present-day Greer (town) had been bought by Captain John Lowndes from the Cherokee Nation in 1794."Lowndes had married ATN/JANE McDowell whose father Drayton McDowell had settled there about 1785. Other early residents include James Waddell and his family who started a gristmill in 1828; Jonas Hillman who operated a bakery from 1840 until his death in 1865; Elisha Barnes who ran a wagon shop from 1850 until 1862; Simeon Swindlewright & Sons merchants who did business out of their store from 1860 until 1861; Isaac Sheppard who operated an old salt mine until his death in 1902; Thomas Hinson of Kinston fame who raised chickens on property adjoining present day Greer south of what is now US Highway 411 In 1870 it was reported that Grider's employment district numbered 79 men including sixsmiths, bakers, carpenters, turners etc., all engaged either directly or through agents building public works or doing odd jobs for others local farmers or contractors".At this time Grider also boasted a schoolhouse (built before 1800), Methodist Episcopal church (1853), cemetery (1860), well system (1868), five stores viz: Acker’s grocery store built 1855 by Gideon Acker Jr., Jno Riddle’s general store built 1860 by John Riddle Sr., Holmes’ drugstore & groceries built 1865 by George Holmes Jr., Pemberton’s grocery store & livery stable built 1870 by Alexander Pemberton and John Waddell still operating today as Waddell Drugs . A report dated 1886 stated that "Greer has three churches – First Presbyterian Church organized February 5th 1888 with Rev Burt Fenton as pastor [based] upon revivals held at Homecoming Meeting House], Second Presbyterian Church organized May 8th 1888 with Rev C[harles] Lipscomb as pastor [based] upon revivals held at Lane Baptist Church], Third Presbyterian Church organized November 13th 1888 with Rev Geo Sweitzer as pastor [based] upon revivals Held at heritors house]" According to another source "the First Presbyterian church got its start when Reverend Brent Fenton led revival services which resulted in establishing membership there on February 5th 1888."Rev Fenton served as the first Pastor for over 50 years before he passed away on November 3rd 2006 aged 93 years old
