The current downtown area was built during the late 1960s when Greer experienced rapid growth following establishment of a steel plant within its boundaries that manufactured automobiles and other car parts for local dealerships. However, throughout much of the 1970s and 1980s, Greer struggled to keep up with neighboring towns which enjoyed increased financial privilege due to new state laws enacted during that time period favoring suburban development over rural communities statewide. After the war, many residents left for different parts of South Carolina due to poor soil quality and low prices for agricultural products. By 1960, there were only about 10 people living in Greer. TheCTA Museum has preserved much of what remains from early Greer history including local buildings and natural resources such as fossils dating back to the Palaeocene period (about 66 million years ago). The museum also has an exhibit on modern-day aspects of life in GreER including exhibits on agriculture, industry, transportation and development during its history
