After World War II,istorians began to explore Greer's rich history as it includes many enslaved people who were forced into labor on local plantations during that era During Hurricane Dorian (2018), damage occurred to much of downtown Greer which included loss of critical infrastructure such as power meters and waterlines; however, most businesses managed to remain open despite some disruption

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,711 people, 821 households, and 664 families residing in the town. The population density was 553.4 people per square mile (220.6/km²). There were 901 housing units at an average density of 269.9 per square mile (113.5/km²). The racial makeup of Greer was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1%of the population
Greer was founded in 1827 on the Hiwassee River by a group of Scottish farmers. The town quickly became a transportation and economic center for the region due to its location at the confluence of several rivers. Greer's growth continue until around 1870, when it began to lose population as farmers switched to cotton farming. In 1902, Greer incorporated as a city and grew rapidly again until World War I destroyed most of the town's infrastructure. After the war, Greer experienced rapid growth in trade and industry, becoming one of South Carolina's leading cities. During the 1960s and 1970s, Greer experienced significant social upheaval due to racial tension within its borders. Heavy African American migration into the city caused race riots and street violence that left dozens dead or injured. However, after more than 25 years of peace and progress, tensions between whites and blacks have once again increased in recent decades with successive waves of "investment" from white developers throughout the city limits
