Greer (population: 27,075 in 2010) is a city located in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The population was 23,898 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County and home to Greer University, one of the largest universities in South Carolina. The town was named for General John Greer who fought with General Thomas Sumter during the American Civil War. The area that now Greer was first settled by Europeans in 1672 when Englishman James Johnston sailed into what is now Charleston Harbor on HMS "Providence" and discovered a large bay which he called "Plymouth." He established a trading post here and named it Fort Johnson after his ship but it soon fell into disrepair because no boats could docking there due to high tidal waves caused by hurricanes Allen and Trusty. In 1740 Colonel John Atwater moved his family from Savannah, Georgia to western North Carolina and founded at Ashley Point near present day Greenville what would become known as Atwater's Landing on Albemarle Sound where he built a log wharf for shipping goods up the river to its mouth at Beaufort Harbor on Tybee Island before exporting saltpeter, rice, indigo dye plants, lumber, tobacco and other products to Europe via Spanish traders on their ships anchored at Havana Bay. A year later Atwater's son-in-law Captain James Cook sighted Mount Pleasant along with Cape Fear Mountain from land about three miles (5 kilometers) east of modern Greer off Charleston Harbor while sailing around Cape Lookout; this resulted in Cook naming part of present day Anacostia River after Mount Pleasant/Angle Shoals during an Admiralty voyage in 1745-46 aboard Discovery II commanded by Rear Admiral Sir George Vernon RN In 1781 Captains William Byrd I & II sailed downriver from Yorktown Naval Base under British Flag looking for new sources of slave labor for plantations along the lower Catawba River valley which they found unsuitable because of highsts & cold winters but did find some promising areas including Weldon’s Mill where they began working enslaved Africans until they were liberated by Patriot troops under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Braddock during Prince George’s Cavalry Expedition July 10-15 1814 In 1822 Lt Col Samuel Jepson organized troops within Spartanburg County militia called “The Greyback Rangers” against Native Americans led by Chief Joseph Cushman making raids throughout Spartanburg County killing more than 100 people over 4 months starting February 12th through March 15th 1822 . On January 3rd 1823 Confederate Major Robert Ewell invaded SC from North Carolina leading 1st Battalion 5th Regiment rebel cavalry charging through towns such as Columbia & Spotsylvania Counties destroying homes, barns etc then withdrawing back over Hiwassee River Bridge vandalism continuing into next year joins forces w/ Federal troops led by Brigadier General Pinchot moving south reaching AugustaFebruary 9th1827 On April 25 1865 Union Major Robert Ewell raided Corinth Baptist Church while supplies were being unloaded on ferryboat landing barge below dock resulting in many dead including widow Mrs Jno Cushing father 2 small children mother 2 small children son 6 years old daughter 2 young girls age 7 – 11 years old all killed except little girl who escaped unharmed

The town had a post office from 1838 to 1840 and from 1847 to 1850. In 1862 Greer became part of the newly formed Union Territory; it remained an unincorporated community until 1924 when it incorporated as a city under the name of Greer. In 1924 Greer annexed what is now the eastern edge of Winnsboro City; this annexation created a new municipality with a population of over 100,000 people. In 1960 Greer merged with neighboring Winnsboro City to become one large city with a population over 200,000 people.
Greer was founded in 1828 by General James K. Polk and his wife, Julia Ward Howe. The town became a center of cotton culture in the 1840s and 1850s thanks to its location on the Ashley River. Greer's growth continued during the Civil War, when it became an important supply point for Confederate forces. After the war, Greer experienced rapid growth as a slave market and manufacturing center. Its population reached 10,000 by 1860, but declined to 5,000 by 1870 due to factors such as increased competition from larger towns in neighboring counties. However, Greer's fortunes began to turnaround during Reconstruction Era when its residents helped create the first black bank in South Carolina and establish a white high school. The town also developed into a major commercial center during this time with businesses such as A&P grocery store and J C Penney department store becoming popular among local residents. In recent years, Greer has seen modest growth due to low commodity prices and limited job opportunities within its borders.
