Some of these people include Simeon Greer, one of the founders of Greer, SC; Jesse James Whitman, an American cowboy and pioneer in South Carolina; and Dr. John C. Calhoun, a statesman who played a key role in the American Civil War. Simeon Greer was born on May 3, 1795 in what is now Greer, SC. He was a merchant and political figure in early South Carolina. After serving as justice of the peace for some time he became a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1819. There he helped write the state's first Constitution. In 1824 he was elected to the Second Circuit Court for Spartanburg County. Jesse James Whitman arrived in South Carolina around 1836 and soon established himself as one of its most successful businessmen and political figures. He served as mayor of Spartanburg from 1840 to 1842 and also ran for governor three times but failed each time. During his career as an entrepreneur Whitman developed several major projects—the first being construction of what is now known as The State House at Monterey Square (now part of Clemson University). He also built two cotton warehouses at Charleston Harbor which were used by merchants to ship their cargoes directly to market without having to go through port cities like Savannah or Mobile Bay. In addition to his business interests, Whitman also acquired land near Columbia where he erected a large plantation house known as The White House (later called Mount Pleasant). Dr. John C Calhoun had long been interested in politics and decided to run for office at age 30 during the term that ended with Andrew Johnson's appointment as president following Lincoln's assassination – an event which Calhoun considered “a great calamity” because it resulted in “the greatest Negro slavery that ever existed”1 Although not very popular with all sections of society due mainly to his support for northern civil rights issues during Reconstruction periodCalhoun nevertheless won election twice – once as Ulysses S Grant's running mate on stage after Lincoln's death (and again four years later when he became president). As president Calhoun made significant efforts towards developing new methods such as carpetbagging which aimed at using army conscripts instead of black men working on plantations Hearts disease then rampant among slaves began declining somewhat although life expectancy remained largely unchanged2 However despite these good intentions many southern whites still found him too soft on race while others saw him simplyas another tool wielded by northerners against them3 Ultimately Calhoun lost both elections resulting in his impeachment proceedings4 During this time period much action took place outsideof government however concerning race relations particularly within slaveholding states things continued moving slowly even though northern power had begun waning5 South Carolina has always been home to some interesting people including Simeon Greer whose influence can be seen throughout town dating back over 350 years6

He also served as a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1889 and 1890. John Crouch opened his convenience store in 1951 near Center Street and I-95. It became known as "Crouch's" because it was the only business open during those years when traffic on I-95 was extremely high. Other early businesses include Lighthouse Cafe (1955), Jiffy Lube (1958), Old Hickory Tavern (1968), First National Bank (1969) and Hometown Hardware (1973). In 2007, First National Bank merged with PNC Financial Corporation to form PNC Financial CorporationgreERard Holdings Incorporated - one of 11 megacorporations formed when PNC merged with nine other banking companies on October 15,2007 ().
