Greer, SC is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state of South Carolina. The population was 7,748 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The Greer community is home to many businesses and services that are necessary for everyday life in this rural area. The history of Greer begins with one man, John Biltmore, who settled there in 1820. He built his own sawmill and outbuildings and became known as one of the early settlers in what would become Greer County. In 1828 Biltmore married Sarah Knight and began to call himself "John Knight" after his new wife's father. They continued to live in Greer until he died in 1892. Sarah Knight Biltmore continued to live there until her death in 1928. She was buried at Spring Hill Cemetery with her husband and four children: John Fenton Biltmore (1829-1925), Sarah Jane (1830-1912), James Leslie Knight (1832-1900) and Frances Marion Knight (1834-1945). After her death, her son James LeslieKnight took over management of the cemetery until his death in 1950; then it passed briefly through inheritance to Mrs.[wife] Aiken before finally passing it on to their daughter Mrs.[daughter] Aiken who currently manages it as part of a family trust established by her late mother which includes other members from adjacent counties including Spartanburg County, North Charleston County, Anderson County and Laurens County along with descendants from both parents including three daughters living today: Msgr.[Mrs.] Aiken Hargrave (born 1959), Mrs.[Miss.] Patricia Hargrave (born 1963), Dr.[Rev.] Wesley Witherspoon III (born 1951). Greer is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. The first settler in Greer was John Greer who arrived on March 12, 1829. By 1830, there were five families residing in Greer. In 1832, the railroad reached Greer and by 1840 there were twenty-four families living in Greer. A Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1843 and later used as a schoolhouse. On July 4th, 1861, Confederate soldier John Coker killed three Union soldiers near Greer while they slept and took their horses to market so he could sell them for money to buy supplies for his army. In 1865 Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway began construction through Spartanburg County and came through Greer on its way to within two miles of the town limits; this caused great excitement as it meant that goods would no longer be transported overland from Winchester or Columbia but would have to be shipped by rail. On December 22nd of that year an attack occurred by Confederate forces against one of these trains at Pinkney Hill near Greer; nine Union soldiers were killed including Captain George Tilton and four wounded before they were able to withdraw without being attacked again. On February 16th 1870 a fire destroyed part of the courthouse which served as county seat until 1966 when it was replaced by what is now called The Governor's Palace which was dedicated on May 5th of that year after then Governor Michael Fetterman moved into the building from his home in Greenville In 1912 Hilda Brownell becamethe first black woman elected to office when she won election as a Democrat to represent District 3A (which included parts of both Spartanburg County and Greenwood) with 8% of the vote against incumbent white male politician Alfred Iverson’s 94%. She served two terms until her defeat in 1916 by Republican candidate Willis Sowers who received 21%. Brownell returned to office twice more before she finally retired from politics at age 71 due to health problems on November 14th 1934 GreER has been known for its yearly Waffle Festival which takes place during early fall each year beginning around September 15th thru early October inclusive.; this event includes dozens if not hundreds if not thousands of waffles made fresh daily throughout downtown greER providing an excellent opportunity for locals & visitors alike to enjoy good food & company while experiencing some truly unique aspectsof SC history
Greer was founded in 1822 by General James Craik and Colonel David Wilkinson. The town was named for General Craik, who had fought at Bunker Hill and other battles in the American Revolution. Greer became a small farming community with about 100 residents. It wasn't until 1886 that the railroad arrived, which allowed Greer to become a larger town with 2,000 residents.
