The vote failed but Greer has continued to operate as an unincorporated community since then. In 1955, Greer voters passed another referendum allowing for city status but it has not been ratified by the county government. Greer is known for its annual "Greene's Festival" which celebrates agricultural production throughout the state during late August or early September. In1854, after Charleston lost its status as Confederate capital due to Union military victories at New Market and Fort Sumter, Greer became part of Union South Carolina until it seceded from South Carolina in 1861. After the Civil War ended, most of what remained of GreER began to decline with businesses closing down and citizens moving out. Greer was founded in 1814 by Captain John Greer and his wife, Polly. The town was named after Colonel James A. Greer, who donated the land for the town. The first store opened in 1815 and the first post office was established in 1816. In 1838, Greer had a population of around 95 people and it grew to over 200 people by 1860. By 1870, the community had a school, church and several businesses. After being burned down in 1871, Greer experienced another growth spurt with its population reaching 330 people by 1880. However, during the 1890s and early 1900s,Greer suffered from economic decline due to changes in technology and an increasing number of farmers moving into the area. It lost its status as a small town by 1930 when it had only 100 residents remaining.
