The first store built in Greer was a log cabin owned by Benjamin Whitaker which opened November 6, 1830. In 1851 James Witherspoon purchased what is now known as lot 2 (now Block 9) in Greer for $360. He erected a large two-story frame house thereon which he named "The Queen" after his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Witherspoon Keyes (1811–1894). Mrs. Keyes donated this property to the townspeople for use as an public school district meeting hall and gymnasium during its early years; however it did not become operational until 1893 when it was renamed "Greers School". On October 10th 1886 Union General Josiah Bogan fought across county lines at Cowpens against Confederate General Prentiss Banks near present day Mount Pleasant; during this engagement about 25% of all killed were found within 5 miles of where Fort Sumter fell one year earlier; many local citizens lost their lives involved with this event including Mr. Witherspoon who died soon afterwards from wounds received while attending hostilities at Cowpens Battlefield
