Cook led Greer through various phases of development including an expansion into what is now Spartanburg County; construction of a mill; establishment of schools; and growth within the slave trade industry which resulted in increased trade along the York River corridor. In 1865, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded South Carolina during Revolutionary War efforts and burned muchof Columbia before retreating back into North Carolina unopposed. This event left many scars on South Carolina history including that some areas such as Greer were spared destruction total destruction wrought by Early's forces despite being located only a few miles away from their own capital city! Aftermath: The following year saw large numbers of new settlers arrive seeking greener pastures with hopes for better opportunities than they had experienced back at home. Despite this initial optimism, many farms soon failed because lack of soil productivity orchosen climate conditions caused them difficulties meeting production goals set for them by local farmers and traders alike (Galloway). In 1824/25 alone around 100 German immigrants immigrated to Greer under contract from Berlin resulting in an increase population size from 10 residents at that time up to 150 individuals shortly thereafter (Galloway). These newcomers helped spur economic development within town while also contributing greatly to social interactions between Grelers themselves (Baird). Although today little evidence remains directly attributable back then towards village life or cultural phenomena such as music appreciation it is safe presumption that these changes took place nonetheless due largely proximity across shared landscape experiences with people already living here long term (Anderson).
