Greer is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Greer was John Greer who arrived in 1814 from Maryland. He erected a cabin on the present site of Greer High School in 1815 and conducted agricultural experiments with his slaves. In 1824, he married Sarah Rankin and within three years had four children: James (1825-1876), John (1827-1912), Sarah Jane (1829-1904), and Louisa (1831-1910). As early as 1832, there were Methodist missionaries living in Greer. A few years later they organized an Episcopal church which soon became successful and achieved more than 4,000 members by 1840. Reverend Rufus Waddell served as its first pastor from 1840 until his death in 1865. In 1861, when Confederate General Robert Ewell moved north to Florence to lead his troops against the Union army under Ulysses S Grant, Greer residents refused to give up their Union sympathies and joined him there instead. Aftermath of the Civil War led to increased poverty within the community due to shortages of food and goods caused by war production; however, many people rebuilt their homes post-war according to traditional values such as reinforced walls for defense purposes rather than wood framing typical of antebellum Southern homes. In 1870–71 a railway line was built through Spartanburg County linking Charleston with Savannah via Sparta; this railroad led to increased trade and industry throughout Spartanburg County – including Greer – which helped support local society during an era when agriculture accounted for only about one third of all economic output statewide. In addition, schools in Greer opened during this period which prepared students for collegelevel work after graduating from high school or working on farms or other manual labor jobs during those years; these schools continue today as well as providing important resources such as books on history that are used by local historians every year during summit week events that take place here each summertime called "History Days." It wasn’t until 1909 that electric lights began being installed throughout town and even before then somelights were shining out onto Main Street from upstairs windows because electricity hadn’t been brought down into town yet! Electricity finally came into our area back around 1924 so I believe it must have been around 1925 when Mrs Evans started putting lightbulbs inside her house downtown! Unfortunately we didn’t get our own train system until 1947 so most everything has either been transported by Air Force truck or Caravan! With all That said We did manage To Put On Our First Festival Of Music Here In 1956 Called “Festival Park All Souls Day” Which Was A lotOf Fun For All Our Residents And Visitors!!! Then Around 1970 The Town Crier Became Law And StartedSpeaking Out LoudForAllThePopulation Everywhere EvenIfThey weren’t Present At Site Now Because They Were Recorded On Tape!!!!!!!!!!!!! So Over Time We Have Learned How To Hold Meetings electronically Nowadays
