The area was first settled by Native Americans and was known as the "Swamp of Hate" because of the rampant violence and crime that occurred there. In 1812, Englishman John C. Calhoun purchased land in what is now Greer from the Cherokee Nation and began to develop it into a small town. In 1847, a group of settlers led by Captain James Broun founded a post office in Greer. By 1860, there were about 60 people living in Greer. The arrival of automobiles made transportation more accessible and efficient in the late 1800s, which contributed to an increase in crime rates in Greer. Greer is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Greer community began as a logging village on the banks of the Cooper River in 1876. A sawmill and grist mill were built in 1878, and a post office was established there in 1880. The first school in Greer opened in 1881, and the first store opened in 1886. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the 20th century due to its location along Interstate 95 and its proximity to coal mines and other factories. In 1923, Greer became an incorporated city under pressure from residents; however, it reverted back to an unincorporated community after only two years. A new shopping center was built near Greer High School in 1984; however, it failed to take off and was demolished several years later. A new shopping mall called The Commons was planned for Greer but never completed; it would have been located on Highway 601 south of town across from Union Station. In 2000, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Greer; as a result, much of the old economy of downtown establishement including businesses such as Safeway and JCPenney died out completely. As a result of this fire many local businesses closed up shop or relocated their operations outside of town altogether which has impacted negatively on local economies over time
