Greer is a town in Lee County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Greer was John Wilkinson in 1814. The town was named for General James Greer, who fought against British forces during the American Revolution. A post office was established in 1816 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. During the 1830s and 1840s, Greer grew rapidly due to its strategic location on U S Routes 42 and 431 near mile marker 20 on the Transylvania National Pike (now US 421). The town became a center of slave trade and production because of its access to transport routes from nearby Charleston. By 1850, Greer had become an important agricultural community with over 100 slaves working fields around downtown. In 1858, a millrace and dam were built through which railroad tracks flowed into the town and later became known as "The Main Street". A depot was constructed at what is nowMain Street for shipment of goods transported by wagon or carriage into Charleston from surrounding counties including Hilton Head Island. This area would come to be known as "The Depot Square" because many businesses located there - such as Gourdon's grocery store - thrived until they were destroyed by fire in 1906. In 1865-66 a large brick schoolhouse replaced an earlier frame building which served as a Methodist church from 1812 to 1865 when it burned down due to termites infestation; this led to the construction of a larger brick schoolhouse which served Greer until 1959 when it too caught fire; this building still stands today across from County government complex overlooking Main Street where most local offices are located today including that of the sheriff's department
