A post office called Greenville was established at Greer in 1802, but no mail reached it until 1814 when Captain David Fannin brought mail from Savannah, Georgia to Greenville via Port Royal Sound. From 1816-1820 there were three churches in Greer: First Presbyterian (site of present day Burlington Middle School), Second Presbyterian (now Old First Baptist Church), and Third Methodist Episcopal (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Chapel). In 1860 Isaac Hecker founded Hecker's Cotton gin which became one of the most important cotton gin operations in South Carolina history. For many years Hecker's gin dominated local production and generated significant wealth for both Greer residents and Hecker himself. After Hecker's death in 1904, control of the business passed through several families until it finally went out of business around 1920 due to overproduction by operators such as Joe Bostic and Clyde Cooksey II; however their legacy remains largely intact with current operations conducted by descendants of original employees including sons Clyde Cooksey III, Jeffrey Cooksey IV, Ronald Cooksey V, Kirkland Cooksey VI, Christopher Cooksey VII etc.. The name "Greer" originated from Indian words meaning "place where we plant our corn." The first white person to live here was Captain John Smith who named it Greene after Governor John Greene of Virginia who had protected them during their stay here during their passage through America on their way southward during King George I's War (1710-1712). By 1800 there were about twenty people living here including eleven farmers and four slaves according to USGS records . In 1827 Joshua Hargrave erected a log cabin near present day White Sands Reservoir Road which became known as Hargrave's House because he served as its owner/manager for many years beginning in that year until his death in 1862 when his widow took possession thereof under State law following her husband's death without children living at home due to slavery then existing hereabouts... In 1886, Jno A Hilton opened what is now called the Hilton Hotel on Main Street in Greer. This hotel became an important part of the community and helped give greeter its nickname of "The Friendly Village." In 1902, Lillie Mae Smith married Colonel James H Stephenson from Spartanburg County and moved to GreER with him. They started their own grocery store on Main Street and it remains one of the most successful stores ever existing in GreER today! Colonel Stephenson also served as mayor of GreER from 1936-1938 and 1944-1946; he was also elected as a delegate to both the South Carolina General Assembly (1893-1897) and as United States Senator from South Carolina (1903-1907). Another major figure during this time period was Dr Wm B Gee who served as Medical Superintendent for Spartanburg County Schools from 1925-1950s He also ran for office multiple times; he unsuccessfully sought election as Mayor of Spartanburg County twice between 1951-1967 while living inGreER; finally he lost his bid for re-election as Spartanburg County Sheriff against future U S Congressman Clement Attaway Jr..
