Greer is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Greer is located on the banks of the Ashley River. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to inhabit what is now Greer was David Emmons in 1795. He built a cabin on this site and named it Emmonsville after his father. The first schools in Greer were built by Mr. Bickerton in 1803 and Mrs. Cline in 1805/06. There was no school building until 1865 when a Methodist church came to town and began teaching school there. In 1886, John Wesley Griggs opened a store here which became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Greer for its displays of African American art and culture from that era (Griggs died in 1919). It wasn't until 1907 that an electric light system arrived here which made life easier for many residents (the original light bulbs were hand-wrought). In 1911, Greer voters elected their first city councilmember with Wm Aiken as mayor; this was followed by cityhood in 1912 under then Mayor Jno Fenton who enlarged the city limits to include all of Spartanburg County! The population reached 2,000 by 1920 but decreased over time due to rural migration out of Spartanburg County into more densely populated areas throughout South Carolina during prohibition times (1920-1933). In 1933, after much debate among local officials about whether or not to allow alcohol sales within city limits, GreER passed an ordinance allowing such sales with only limited exceptions being granted for grocery stores which had met certainRequirements set forth by the state government; these restrictions did not last long however as By 1934 nearly every grocery store within city limits had succumbed to interstate commerce pressures and closed down altogether! In 1935 City Council voted 3-2 to annex unincorporated parts of neighboring Greenwood County so that GreER would become even more isolated from its larger neighbor! This annexation failed however because Greenwood county offered better farmland than needed while greener land generally lacked good prospects for farming heavy crop production!). The Years 1950 thru 1970 were very difficult especially since oil exploration started near nearby Sumterville during this time period (#1 well known rig drilling area) & farmers had difficulty getting credit due to high prices paid for gasoline & other goods exported from Sumterville) Finally through political maneuvering & some hard work by City Manager Leroy HinsonCity Council approved annexation of large tracts of unincorporated White Oak Township adjacent to GreER resulting in greener land becoming available where once Farms produced little more than corn bread

Over the next several decades, however, Greer's fortunes began to decline as it became increasingly dependent on agricultural production and tourism rather than commercial interests. In 2000,Greer lost its status as county seat when Spartanburg County was unified with Union COUNTY to form South Carolina governor’s office under then-Governor Tom Daschle’s newly created state government system[1].
