On July 3, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The Union army then moved on to take over the Southern states, and by September of that year all but nine of the Confederacy’s fifty-eight counties were under Union control. In Greer County, South Carolina, the Union army burned down much of the county courthouse in 1865 as part of their campaign to clean up the area. This event is also known as the “Greer Massacre” because four black men were killed and twenty-one others were wounded during the attack. In 1948, Greer became an official member city of Charleston pursuant to a resolution passed by the City Council that followed a referendum vote held that year in which more than 60% of voters approved annexation into Charleston County. The population of Greer peaked at over 3000 in 1970 but has since declined slightly due to various factors such as loss of jobs within the local industry or migration to other cities throughout South Carolina due to economic opportunities available there outside ofGreer itself
