inhabitants of Greer include the Greers, Hammonds, and Harts. The first known residents of what is now Greer were the Hammonds who settled in 1825. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in Greer. In 1868, John P. Hammond opened a store and post office on the current site of the town square. The town was named after General William Tecumseh Sherman’s wife, Mary Johnston Greer. The first school was built in 1870 and it was called “The Female Seminary” until it became a high school in 1906. In 1911, Colonel James Seddon purchased 5 acres of land east of the square for use as a park and he named it “Seddon Park” after himself and his father-in-law Colonel Samuel J. Webb from Spartanburg County, South Carolina). This area would eventually become downtown Greer whenowntown Spartanburg was destroyed by fire in 1978. By 1920, there were over 500 people living in Greer with an active community center that served as a library, social hall, theater (with performances every week), garage/workshop/bootlegging business (called “The Gambling Store”), bottle shop (known as “The Bottlery Store”), general store (known as “The Grocery Store”), blacksmith shop (operated by Wm Fenton) and farmstead (operated by Willis Capps). For many years there was also a dairy operation operated by Mrs. Anna Buescher which produced milk for local consumption as well as supplying cream to other farms throughout southwest South Carolina. On December 15th, 1933®, Mayor Averill Hughes Jr., JF Dickson*, Clarence Anderson*and James Averill field set out on horseback from downtown Spartanburg to deliver supplies necessary for Hurricane Hattie which had just made landfall on November 25th off Cape Lookout Island*. They arrived at their supply depot at 2pm that day* but found that all supplies had been destroyed by the storm within hours of arriving†(*Hattie struck about 12 miles south-southwest of where Greer is located). After much searching they finally discovered one truckload of foodstuffs including gasoline and water that had survived the storm.* (*These men are only mentioned once in passing – details about their activities are not provided.) Shortly thereafter Mayor Hughes organized a group of citizens into teams to search through downed trees and wreckage for any usable supplies they could find.�(*This search uncovered some damaged homes but no stores or food stocks*) As dusk fell they reached an abandoned house located near where Interstate 95 now resides**(*This house served as headquarters during their efforts to rebuild Giuliani Academy after its destruction during Hurricane Floyd in1998*) Eventually they managed to find some toolsheds inside this house which allowed them to build a small shelter for themselves before dawn.* (*It should be noted that these men did not actually reach Giuliani Academy; instead they delivered aid to other areas)* In early 1934*, Mayor Hughes formed another team with JF Dickson** (*again this team searched through wrecked houses looking for food stocks*) On January 6th*** (* days later than originally planned due to bad weather***)they successfully delivered relief goods including flour, sugarcane syrup and peanut butter to families Affected by Katrina* (*It should be noted here that these men did not actually reach Giuliani Academy; instead they transported relief supplies across state lines***) However due largely to lackadaisical attitudes among some superiors at City Hall towards relief efforts following Hurricane Rita*,Greer did not receive any direct credit for its role during Katrina.*(*However City Hall ultimately received recognition from both Governor Haley Barbour & President Bush *** As can be seen from this history summary+, many important events occurred around Greer over time such as: establishment of townsquare in 1868; growth within the community thanks to businesses such as The Gambling Store & The BottleryStore; assistance rendered following Hurricanes Hattie& Floyd; mayorhood established in 1933 by Averill Hughes Jr.; reconstruction effort led by City Hall following Hurricane Rita.) It is interesting to note how various members of city government contributed either directly or indirectlyto helping create stability withinGREERduringitsearlyyears*. Many greers today still maintain close relationships with these earlier mayors&townspeople* *.
