The current courthouse was built in 1892 and it is one of only a few remaining antebellum courthouse buildings in the state. The town has experienced many changes over its history. In 1865, Greer became the capital of Anderson County after Charleston was moved to that location from Beaufort County. In 1868, Greer becoming an important railroad junction with connections to other eastern states during Reconstruction period. However, by 1870 Greer's economy had declined following extensive flooding which destroyed most crops and businesses within the town Limits. In 1892, new courthouse building opened in Greeragogue district which included a library and several stores catering to white settlers living outside of the original townsite limits while black residents continued to use their old homes within town limits for housing until they were demolished around 1960s due to code enforcement concerns about what could be used as New Addition zoning districts inside "Old Town." During World War II, much activity took place at Greer Naval Air Station (later Whiteman AFB). This included manufacturing military planes such as Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter jets and Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers for United StatesAAF strategic bombing campaigns against Nazi Germany and Japan during WWII; these planes were based on land at Whiteman AFB until 1944 when they began flying out from RAF Fairford England using amphibious landing craft brought ashore via USS Wasp Navy transport aircraft carriers . Other wartime activities at Greer NAS include: production of ROTC Cadets radio equipment for service academies all over America starting before 1942; also cadet training barracks constructed between 1941-1945 including two high school classrooms/equivalents for Officers' Mess dining halls which became operational late 1943 or early 1944; radar installation beginning 1942; construction of auxiliary power plant complete by 1945 ..
