In 1814, when Orangeburg University was established nearby, Drury Daniel donated an acre of land to Orangeburg College for use as their campus grounds and also built a new building thereon called theDaniel House which still stands today as one of Orangeburg's most valuable historical resources. In 1865, when Greenwood Parish was created from parts of Richland and Orangeburg counties, Greer became its capital and seat of government. At that time it had a population of only 4 people and consisted mostly of farmers living around Williamstown Lake (now Wofford Lake).
