He also provided Panic money which helped support local businesses during financial hard times. In 1856, David Gregg's son James Fitch Gregg bought the mill from his father and he continued to operate it until 1911 when it was sold to Wm Hite Stroud who later donated it to Spartanburg County Schools as part of the Agricultural Education Program (AEP). The AEP functioned as a training program for young local farmers and their families who would then sell their crops at local markets or grow them on their own property. The school district acquired the mill in 1951 when Spartanburg County Schools became an educationally segregated entity. The old mill building still stands today as part of Greer Middle School which serves students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade In 1957, Mrs. Grace Goode donated land adjacent to her home at 625 Pine Street for use as a school ground by Spartanburg County Schools Mrs. Goode served as Superintendent of schools for both Greer Elementary (1957-1966) and Lenoir High School (1966-1989). She was also instrumental in developing basketball within Greere Parish during her time as superintendent Since its inception,Greer Middle School has been one of the most successful public high schools inSouth Carolina due to its excellent curriculum including Advanced Placement classes; strong sports programs; ample extracurricular activities; well-equipped gymnasiums; comprehensive technology resources;and excellent neighborhood outreach programs Today’s students are experiencing someof South Carolina’s most challenging economic times but they remain resilient under pressure
