The community began enjoying firearms in the late 1800s when a group of settlers discovered gunpowder and other explosives buried near their farmstead. The first handguns manufactured in Greenwood were 1892 model “Patriots” by P.O.W. Manufacturing Company, who also produced rifles and shotguns. In 1912, the Colt revolver company settled in Greenwood and began producing revolvers here as well, most notably the Colt Python Model 1903 (1912-1913). This pistol was originally designed as an over-the-counter weapon for law enforcement officers and farmers alike. It had a 5-inch barrel with a 16 inch overall length, was fed from an 8 round magazine, and weighed just 3 pounds empty. These pistols were very popular among citizens because they were reliable, affordable, easy to operate, and held up to repeated handling/use. Gunsmiths quickly adapted to this new industry in Greenwood by creating more specialized guns such as the Single Action Army (.45 caliber), .410 shotgun (6mm), .22 rifle (7mm Remington Magnum), 9mm Luger pistol (9mm Parabellum), 12 gauge shotgun (12 gauges ranged from 0.410 inches to 44 grains Welmet projectile size), 10ga pump action deer rifle (10ga calibers ranged from 0.25 inches to 2 inches O/U) – all designed specifically for the needs of local hunters or target shooters in Greenwood at that time!

The Greenwood Gun Case History began in 1895 when W. H. Herrington, a gunsmith and retailer, opened his store on Main Street in Greenwood. The store was the first in Greenwood to sell firearms and it continued to do so until 1954. In that year, the store was purchased by J.M. Stevens who turned it into an armory and continue selling firearms until 2002. After W.H.'s death in 1949, his son, Harry Herrington took over the business from him and ran it until his death in 1984. After Harry's death, grandson Cecil Herrington took over the business from him and continued running it until 2001 when he sold it to John Sievers of Greenville for $2 million dollars.
